PR for PR: The Beginning

When I introduce myself to people I'm just meeting, the cliche question of "so, what do you do?" comes up on a regular basis. Responses (in good humour) to saying I'm in public relations and corporate communications usually focus on the stereotypical professional liar, spin doctors, etc that many people think public relations is all about. To be honest, I can understand why many would think that, but there really is so much more to the job.

That is something I really want to focus on with this blog.

Studying CCPR at the post-graduate level, almost every single time anything is brought up about spin or lying or even slightly bending the truth is shot down by instructors. The consistent message of "honesty is the best policy" is continuously used to show that time and time again, problems will be solved or even diverted if truthful information is communicated to the public, stakeholders and the like.

Since the power of honesty has been, is being and will be taught to generations of CCPR students, hopefully the reputation of professional liars and crooked messengers can finally be extinguished. I'm excited to focus on this all in the coming blogs.

This is PR for PR

  2. Due to this post I refuse to use the word "spin" when I talk in any way about what I plan to do for a living. Keep up the good work!
